Apple pickle

It was drizzling and very cold yesterday. I was feeling lazy and had no intentions of doing anything else apart from sitting and watching my favourite TV show "Merlin" with a mug full of hot tea. It was so cozy and warm. The rain did not seem to stop any time soon so we could not go out for lunch. As it struck 1, I had no choice but to cook something.

I dragged myself to kitchen. Trying to cook something new drives the laziness away from me. I knew what I had to cook as a side dish as soon as I saw apples in the fruit bowl. Here is the recipe of the side dish I cooked within 10 minutes. I had to cook rice and sambhar as well of course, but it was ok to cook for another 1/2 hour with that amazing aroma of Apple pickle filled the kitchen.

Ingredients
Apple (I used green. It is ok to use red apples too) 1
Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
Chilli powder 1 tsp
Coriander/dhaniya powder 1 tsp
Salt to taste to taste
Lemon juice 1 tsp

To Temper
Oil  1 tsp
Mustard seeds 1/2 tsp
Fenugreek seeds  1/4 tsp

Grate/ finely chop the apple. They tend to turn brown if kept for a long time so it is best to chop then right before you are to cook it.

Drizzle the lemon juice over grated apple and keep it aside.

In a pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds and wait till they splutter.

Add fenugreek seeds and fry for a minute.

Take the pan out of flame and then add turmeric powder, Chilli powder and salt.

Also add coriander powder and give it a mix and keep the pan back in flame.

Add the grated apple and mix well.

Let it cook for 5 minutes and then remove from the flame.
Serve hot as a side dish to any meal.

  • I had seen my mum prepare this from green mangoes. But this has a very different and very yummy taste.
